On Land

As we are located on a remote island in a developing country, we kindly ask guests to be understanding of certain limitations that we have on the island. As you can imagine, a place like Alor does not have any kind of recycling facility or waste management system, therefore we try our best to not create additional non-biodegradable waste unless we struggle to find an alternative. As much as possible, we source the food served both to the guests and staff from local, organic farmers in order to reduce our non-organic waste to a minimum. We have started working more closely with the farmers in Alor in order to be able to trace our food and share our knowledge with them to further develop their garden and in turn be able to offer a wider range of fruits and vegetables in our daily meals.

In order to minimize our non-organic waste, we offer homemade drinks such as lemon tea, ginger iced tea, coconut water, fresh juices, smoothies (plant-based milk available made from local kenari nut milk or coconut milk), iced coffee or iced chocolate.

It is an unfortunate reality that much of Indonesia’s waste ends up in a landfill, or is burned in the open air. Therefore we ask our guests to please be mindful of where the rubbish is going and to kindly avoid bringing things that are not biodegradable if they are not necessary, or if possible, to bring back batteries and empty toiletry bottles to their home country for proper disposal. Reef-safe sunscreen, biodegradable soaps, bamboo cotton buds and other eco-friendly toiletries are more than welcome.

We are not claiming that we are doing everything perfectly, but we do strive to do better day by day, and this is the message we hope we are able to convey.

In terms of water activities, we ask snorkelers and divers alike to be respectful of the marine environment and be very aware of their buoyancy. Like you, we care about coral reefs and we try to limit the impact divers and snorkelers have on the environment.

We ask guests not to feed the fish, not to touch or harass marine life, not to manipulate marine life to compose an image, to avoid shining lights directly into the creatures’ eyes, not to collect shells, and to be aware of fin movements in order to not kick or break the reef. We remain available if you would like to improve your buoyancy or finning techniques, we are happy to share our knowledge and professional advice at no extra cost.

In 2020, along with established dive resorts and dive centers in the Alor archipelago, Alor Tanapi became a founding member of “ABA” – Aliansi Bahari Alor, a marine association which aims to promote a sustainable marine tourism model for the Alor Marine Protected Area. ABA promotes values of ethics, safety and professionalism, supports conservation and research activities as well as local community projects to develop sustainable tourism in Alor.

The Alorese are extremely kind and friendly people, but they are also shy and not yet completely accustomed to having tourists or divers visit their islands. We believe this is what makes Alor charming and interesting, but it also means you will find a limited availability of Western goods.

We are available for any further questions you might have.

Local Produce

As much as possible, we source the food served both to the guests and staff from local farmers and work closely with them to teach them about permaculture and are working on ways to diversify their production. We offer homemade drinks such as lemon tea, ginger iced tea, fresh juices, smoothies, iced coffee or iced chocolate.

Biodegradable Products

We kindly ask guests to please be mindful of how rubbish is disposed in Indonesia and if possible avoid bringing things that are not biodegradable if they are not necessary, or to bring back batteries and empty toiletry bottles to their home country for proper disposal.

Community Action

We participate in reef cleanups and try to encourage local kids and parents to join. We try to do our part and encourage others to do the same in an effort to further sustainability in Indonesia. The majority of our builders and employees are from the Alor archipelago.
